More about our Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic
In 2016, the Howell Nature Center’s Wildlife Clinic took in over 3,000 injured and orphaned wild animals—more than it had in all of 2015 and every year before. In response to the overwhelming demand for these services, the clinic closed its doors on Monday, August 22, with a plan to re-open August 29. This brief hiatus allowed staff and volunteers to implement cost-cutting measures and concentrate on the wildlife patients that were currently in our care.
As the largest wildlife rehabilitator in Michigan, we see cases from 28 counties as well as the upper peninsula. One reason for 2016’s enormous increase is the loss of many licensed rehabilitators over the last ten years. There is simply nowhere else for many of these innocent creatures to go.
